The Bachelor Recap, Week 4 (or) Outdoorsy Dates

Here’s my first installment of “The Bachelor” recaps…  Feel free to share your thoughts! I love chatting about junky TV. :) You can also see my original article here.

This week’s episode opens with Ben in a helicopter flying over Park City, Utah.

Ben says that he wants the girls to “experience the outdoors.” It seems evident that he’s interested in seeing which of the ladies would be compatible with his own lifestyle. I’m betting on Nicki, Jennifer, and Lindzi C.—they seems like they’d be pretty good with this type of date.

Chris comes out and introduces three dates—two one on ones, and one group date. Rachel snags the first one on one, with the clue: “Let’s let nature take its course.”

She explains that she feels nervous for the date because she’s had a hard time communicating well in past relationships.

Meanwhile, Casey B. starts feeling upset that she didn’t get a date. I’m pretty sure that Casey B. is making it at least to the top three, so I don’t think she needs to worry. But let’s hope she doesn’t pull an Ashley and get kicked off because she’s too afraid to fully commit!

All of the girls wait awkwardly for Ben to pick Rachel up for their one on one, and then they take off in a helicopter. What is it with “The Bachelor” and helicopters, anyway?

On the date, awkwardness ensues.

Unfortunately, Rachel’s nervousness manifests itself in completely shallow, stop-and-go conversation. Ben says that Rachel is “great—super mellow and easy-going,” but it seems like they really lack chemistry. It’s too bad, because Rachel seems like a sweetie!

In one particularly hard to watch moment, Rachel says, “I like how you’re good at that little wink.”

Ben replies, “Oh, more like squinting.”

I think I’ll just let that speak for itself.

For part two of the date, things really turned around. After Rachel gives a little mini-monologue about her previous relationships and her willingness to open up, Ben seems to get reassurance that things might eventually get better. He gives her the rose. I’m just not sure that the spark is really there, as much as I like her.

The group date girls are headed out on another outdoorsy date. Ben shows up on a horse, which has the girls swooning (I have to admit, it was good look for him…) and gives the girls their own horses to ride for the afternoon. It was nice that Lindzi didn’t throw her experience in the other girls’ faces. Very classy!

After riding, the girls go fly-fishing. No one looks very comfortable in the water, but Courtney takes the opportunity to shine. She catches a fish, and totally woos Ben along the way. You have to give it to that girl—she’s pretty horrible, but she really knows what she’s doing. Anyone else out there think she looks like Jackie Onassis?

The night portion of the group date starts off a little rough. Samantha confronts Ben and asks why she has been given only group dates. Ben shoots back by saying, “On the group dates that you’ve been on, you’ve been highly emotional.”

Unfortunately, Samantha lives up to her reputation during the rest of the conversation. Even though it’s great for Ben to be honest, I did feel a little bit bad for Samantha, too. I don’t think she intended for it to be quite such a loaded conversation. Ben finally admits that he doesn’t think that their relationship is going anywhere, and sends Samantha home in the middle of the cocktail party.

Soon after, Ben and Casey B. have their first time alone. Ben is completely adorable with Casey and admits that he wanted to kiss her during the group date but felt awkward. He definitely says a few things that were very concrete—it almost seems, for a minute, like he’s already decided who’s getting the final rose.

“My relationship with her is growing faster than most… I might end up with her!” he says.

Just when things are going well again, Ben pulls Courtney aside and she starts playing major games. She acts frustrated, like she’s almost giving up, and Ben ends up bringing her the rose. He even admits that she wasn’t his original choice. Moments like these make me think Courtney is a truly horrible person, but who knows?

The next day, Ben and Jennifer head out on their one on one date. They climb down a crater together and end up dropping into the water. It seems adventurous, but maybe also a little bit strange? Jennifer is nothing but genuine, though.

At night, after an adorable conversation where they talk about their future together, they both run inside through the rain. Jennifer gets the rose, which is no surprise.

The happy couple heads to a Clay Walker concert and they spend the rest of the night dancing.

The rose ceremony is not free from its own drama, of course. Emily decides to warn Ben about the “real Courtney” but it ends up backfiring. It seems like every season, one of the girls falls into this trap. You think they would learn that talking about the other girls just brings them down! Ben even warns her to stay focused.

Courtney ends up finding out what Emily said, and Emily denies it to Courtney’s face! Don’t these girls realize that the truth will come out as the episodes are aired?

At the rose ceremony, Ben chooses to eliminate Monica. Monica seems pretty upset, but Ben says goodbye with, “It was nice to meet you.” Ouch.

Next week, everyone is headed to Puerto Rico for a nice island getaway—any bets for the eliminated girls? I’m thinking maybe Emily and Blakeley.

When Strangers Help Out (or) Cirque du Soleil Part 2

How’s everyone doing? I’m just getting back into the school/work routine after a truly memorable weekend.

Remember when I published this interview with Cirque du Soleil costume designer Liz Vandal? Well, I was actually offered free tickets to the premier of “Ovo” on the Santa Monica Pier a few weeks ago! Isn’t that thoughtful of them?

I was very excited to go see the show, but when Jake found a cheap flight down for the weekend, it really put the cherry on top! He was pretty excited to escape Seattle, too. This is what it looked like last week:

On Friday we had a picnic on the Santa Monica pier before heading over to the show. So much fun, and such a good way to save on meals!

The show was incredible– it’s hard to imagine doing even one itsy-bitsy segment of their choreography. I also loved knowing a little bit about their costumes! We had a great time.

The next morning, we decided that we wanted to head over to Disneyland. The forecast was rainy, so we figured that the park would be pretty empty. And as Seattle people, rain doesn’t scare us away :)

I am crazy about those drawing classes in California Adventure! I think it’s so fun! It’s the four-year-old in me. I tried to drag Jake into a second one, but he wasn’t too enthusiastic. I guess I can understand… ;)

I almost forgot to tell you guys the best part!

As we were in line to get Jake’s ticket (I have a season pass) an employee who was spending his day in the park with friends asked us if we would like to get in for free!!! He had one more free guest park hopper! Isn’t that just the sweetest? We were so excited– maybe a little embarrassingly so. He really made our day! We actually ran into him later in the park and had a chance to thank him one more time.

And guess what? It didn’t rain a single drop! It was a pretty perfect day.

Yesterday before Jake’s flight, I took him down the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu for a little while. I thought he should get a little taste of the beautiful beach before heading back to chilly Washington. :)

PS. Great news for you Bachelor fans out there– I’m now the Bachelor weekly correspondant for Neon Tommy! So you will all get weekly posts here, as well. And for those of you crazies who don’t like the Bachelor, well… you might want to skip those posts… ;)

Die Hard (or) Flashback

I just got back from watching “Die Hard” on the big screen. This is one of the perks of being a film student– they call this kind of thing “class.” ;)

Have you seen it recently?? This was my first time, and I was seriously glued to the screen. I’m pretty sure I had a few of those gasps that are just loud enough to be slightly embarrassing, too. I couldn’t help it!

P.S… here’s another video that I’ve recently discovered– there’s no one like Elvis, if ya know what I mean :) hehe.

2012 (or) Aspirations

Happy New Year!!

I have a good feeling about 2012.

I have finished up all of my shifts at work for winter break, so now I’m just tying up loose ends, sleeping in, and spending time with friends until I head back down to LA!

I got some good news at the end of my last shift, too– there just might be a future for me in the company where I work once I graduate! Very exciting. I love where I work, but it’s hard to know where life will take me. It’s just nice to think of options! :)

How are you all feeling about the new year? I love fresh starts. I feel like I get a chance to rejuvenate myself and set new goals! Speaking of goals…

Anita’s Resolutions:

1. Take good care of my body. That means working out, drinking ridiculous amounts of water, and getting good sleep. (Hey! It’s worth a try! ;) )

2. Learn to cook… more than just breakfast food and Trader Joes everything.

3. 3.5 GPA baby. (ehhhhhh)

4. Find something amazing to do this summer. It might be my last– I gotta make it count! :)

——

Off to go watch The Bachelor with some girlfriends… LOVE IT.

(oh by the way… I’m TWENTY now!!)

Anita, Unscripted (or) The Daily Grind

Hello friends!

Where has the time gone?? I came home after finals and started working the next day. I was able to work at the same place where I was employed this summer, which has worked out really well! It has been a complete time sucker, though!

In other news, I got my hair cut! (That’s right– things have been crazy around here ;-) )

Okay, I realize that these aren’t exactly top quality pictures. I may have just taken my hair down from a pony tail after a solid eleven hours at work. And snapped pictures with my laptop camera. But I figured I needed to show you guys!

Like the bangs?

I’m not exactly a hair superstar. I actually had to ask my stylist at this last appointment how to blow dry my own hair… (hah). I think I’ve got it down, though! Practice makes perfect!

Just in case I don’t have a chance to write over the next couple days– Merry Christmas!!

An Interview with Cirque du Soleil (or) Cat Got Your Tongue?

Yesterday I had the opportunity to interview the costume designer for Cirque du Soleil’s newest show, Ovo. It’s a show entirely inspired by insects! I thought you might enjoy reading this one– it was such a fun interview!

c/o Cirque du Soleil

Can I just say, though, that for someone who loves to talk, and I mean loves, I have a lot to learn in the interviewing field. What is it about having to ask all the questions that is so nerve-racking?!

Here’s the interview! And here it is in its original form. :)

The costumes for Cirque du Soleil’s new show, “Ovo,” are designed by Liz Vandal, who specializes in extreme movement. Vandal has been working with Cirque du Soleil since 2008, creating unique, colorful costumes that allow the performers to perform elaborate acrobatic stunts uninhibited. She spoke with Neon Tommy about her role in creating costumes for “Ovo,” which comes to Santa Monica in late January.

What were you inspired by while designing the costumes for this show?

“Well, the world of insects was sort of my passion when I was a child, so I was very inspired by that general theme. It was sort of a quest to find the approach for the design because our artistic director wanted us to implicate the world of insects. These costumes [required] a very abstract angle for me at first. I had to think of what I was the feeling toward the spider, for example. I had to close my eyes and think, oh, a spider—it’s an elegant, sexy, long-limbed woman. I had to think in these terms. It was inspiring in that way.”

How did you do the research? Did you look at pictures, or did you look at insects that were living?

“I looked at insects for some colors, and textures of the shells, but I more looked for textures in nature, for infinitely small pictures of a leaf, or the scales of a fish. And all of this research made me realize that there are universal textures that we find everywhere in the world of nature. They repeat. It’s more like philosophical research. For example, cockroaches are ugly, and I don’t want to be next to them. There is something repulsive about them. So I had to trade a beautiful costume for something else.”

What kind of considerations needed to be made in the costumes for different members of the cast? For example, do the acrobats require something different than the trampoline artists?

“I think it’s much more simple than what people imagine. It’s sort of a logical process. The body needs to be able to move naturally. Just like today, I’m wearing this very tight black dress that doesn’t have any stretch, and I feel uncomfortable! The costume is like the skin, it needs to stretch and adapt. I based my costumes for Ovo on the stretchiness of the fabric. I combined fabric that’s used to make bathing suits with other fabric. Layers of fabric that all stretch. My research permitted us to build some fabrics from scratch so that some of the fabrics, like that for crickets, have pleats. It looks like a muscle in a way. It just has to move with the body in the extreme purposes.”

Do the costumes last for the entire run of the show? Do they require repairs?

“Like anything, when you gain something, you lose something. The more you add detail, the more you have possibilities of breaking. Of course there are rips. We have a couple of costumes of the same kind, to ensure that there are backups in case anything happens.”

How was designing for this show different than your past work?

“I have a lot of experience in the world of dance, and my designs in that field actually used to be quite minimalist. So this time, for the first time, I was allowed to just sort of let it all out. I was allowed to use colors, shapes, transformative textures. It was a real pleasure.”

How do you use color in your designs? Is that a focus for you?

“Because we are in the circus, we have the opportunity to use very bright, strong colors. Right there, we have the public attention. At first the crickets were all green, but then we decided that we had to use a little bit more color with them. Nothing should distract you from the body. The idea is using just enough tone not to distract—that is the challenge.”

What do you expect in your future?

“I’m a specialist of the body in extreme movement. I will always stay with extreme movement because that’s where I specialize, and that’s where the clients will come. I’d love to develop a product line of dance or swimwear. But that’s sort of a secret that I share with you.”

Cirque du Soleil’s “Ovo” will be performing under the Big Top at the Santa Monica Pier from January 20 – March 25, 2012.

Disneyland at Christmastime (or) Stop Week

What does a girl do with the extra days that her university sets aside for studying before finals? Go to Disneyland, of course!  :)

I love Disneyland always, but at Christmastime, it’s even more special.

Disneyland is decked out in what must be thousands of yards of garland, tinsel, and lights. It’s really beautiful. They even make it snow!

I’m sorry that these pictures aren’t more well-lit. I decided to take along just my phone for pictures, so that I didn’t need to worry about my camera. :)

I feel like I should mention that Amanda did not get a score of 0! I’m not sure what happened there… I did totally beat her though :)

Who are those hotties? ;)

Did you know that Disney completely re-vamps a few of their rides for the Christmas season?

My favorite Christmas-themed ride is the Haunted Mansion.

They decorate it for “A Nightmare Before Christmas,” so it’s actually sort of Christmas-Halloween themed.

Remember the portraits in the hallway while you’re walking towards the buggies?  They’ve changed those, too!

When Amanda and I got into our buggy, one of the creepy ride operators creeped around the side and scared us. I swear my scream was Hitchcock-worthy.

I love all of the details.

Even the scary heads have Christmas cheer!

I didn’t really feel comfortable taking any photos on the actual ride, (can’t ruin the Disney magic!) but it is completely different! Everything is snowy, and there is garland and holly everywhere. Plus, it tells a completely different story! So fun.

If you ever have the chance to come to Disneyland after Thanksgiving, I recommend it. It really is a different experience! :)

Diane Keaton’s Reading (or) Menswear on Women

Well it’s official. Diane Keaton is just as endearingly honest and hilarious as I thought she would be.

Last night, I went over to Westwood (UCLA Bruin territory!) to cover another story for Neon Tommy. Diane Keaton was participating in the “Hammer Readings” series at Hammer Museum. She read excerpts of her new book, “Then Again,” and answered questions.

The whole event was quite the experience. They ran out of tickets, so I snuck in (Hey! A reporter’s gotta do what a reporter’s gotta do!).

Then someone passed out in the middle of the aisle– and the whole thing kept going! :( The ambulance came fairly quickly, though, so I’m hoping that everything worked out okay. I’ve only seen medical emergencies like that happen a few times, and it’s always very surreal and saddening.

The reading itself, though, was amazing. Diane’s mother was such an incredible influence on her life– she supported her though everything! It sounds like she didn’t give herself nearly enough credit.

Watching clips from Diane’s films was actually one of my favorite parts. I swear I smiled through the whole thing.

Also, she clarified that Annie Hall was indeed based on her own life! Apparently Woody Allen got her own character down really well (it very much resembled Keaton herself) but her family was all off! Her mom wasn’t very happy about it, she said.

She even wore her own clothes for the film! I couldn’t believe that the wardrobe that became so iconic was made up of her own clothing! Gotta love a woman with style :) I’m not sure I could pull off men’s clothing, though!

I was cracking up when she was talking about her relationships with Woody Allen, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty. Oh my goodness. One of the audience members said, “Diane, you’ve had the most amazing romances with these incredible men.” To which she answered back, “Oh, you have no idea!”

Admit it, this is the cutest thing EVER.

I have to admit, I also teared up right along with Diane when she said, “It’s just, my life has been beyond my wildest dreams.” I can only hope I’ll feel the same way when I’m her age.

If you’d like to see the original story that I wrote, you can find it here. There’s much more detail about the event.

Hope you are having a good week! I’m burning a Christmas candle and drinking peppermint tea. (Heaven!)

Five Holiday Makeup Must-Haves (or) a Preview!

Happy Monday! This week is a massive mix of very fun events and seriously stressful homework. (Was that too many alliterations? Maybe.)

I just published an article today at Neon Tommy that I thought I’d share with you all! But I’ll make it a little more blog friendly (more pictures!) this time around.

With the holidays just around the corner, it’s time to start stocking up on holiday makeup essentials. However, there’s no need to buy more than a few staples. These five products are versatile enough that they’ll carry you through every occasion.

1. A light, oil-free moisturizer.

Philosphy’s “Hope in a Jar” is a great example of a hydrating moisturizer to help keep your skin soft and glowing. Wear it in place of heavy foundations to keep your complexion even and your look natural during chilly winter days.

2. Gel eyeliner.

Bobbi Brown’s “Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner” will give you the precision you need for the perfect cat-eye during a night out. This liner is also versatile enough to work for day: you can apply just enough to emphasize your eyes without making it obvious that you’re wearing makeup—for Christmas photos, maybe? Black or dark, dark brown are both no-fail choices, but shimmery grey can also be beautifully subtle.

3. False eyelashes.

The Sephora Collection “Flirt-It Lash Duo” is the perfect addition to your Christmas party dress. False lashes are dramatic and alluring, and the option for full or half strips allows you some flexibility. Don’t shy away from them– they’re worth the effort!

4. Shimmer powder.

The days of glitter roller-balls are certainly over, but subtle shimmer can be perfectly festive during the holiday season. Make Up For Ever’s “Diamond Powder” in “Champagne” is just bold enough to pair with a  simple cocktail dress, but wouldn’t overpower a more stand-out number, as well.

5. Lip Stain.

Just-bitten lips are always a staple of the colder seasons. Berry shades, especially, manage to look sensual and sweet, and this lip stain by “Tarte” makes them low maintenance and long lasting.

Here’s a link to the original article.

In other news, tomorrow I am attending a book signing and reading of Diane Keaton‘s new book, Then Again. I’m pretty excited– I’ll be writing an article about it, so I’ll keep you posted!

Black Friday (or) My Lucky Gold Shoes

Last night, my sister and I braved the Black Friday madness. (I totally love it.)

We stood outside of Old Navy for a good 45 minutes before they finally let us in.

Don’t let that face fool you! It was freeeeezing. But Nina and I just kept going over our game plan. :)

We hit up the pea coats, scarves, henleys, cords, and sweaters. Sobasicallythewholestore.

I wore my trusty gold boat shoes, which I swear are lucky. How else could everything I try on fit?!

All in all, it was quite the successful shopping trip. Nina left with a few scarves, a sweater, a cozy hat and some fuzzy socks.

And then there’s me…

For the record, this all set me back less than a hundred dollars! I think those black  skinny jeans may have been my favorite find. They’re flattering and they’ll look so cute with flats!

Did any of you all go out shopping last night? Or did you just come back from shopping this morning!?

I’m off to a quick camping trip. Enjoy your long weekend! :)
